    JPEG Compression

In relation to digital files, compression is the act of taking one file and making it smaller by removing bits of information. Sometimes you're removing empty or useless bits of information so the file reduces in size but it appears exactly the same. This is called lossless compression. On the other hand, if you remove bits that lower the quality of the file, this is known as lossy compression.

The tool on this page conducts lossy compression by reducing the quality of the JPEG image using advanced encoding algorithms from MozJPEG, developed by Mozilla.

Why would you want to compress a JPEG?

JPEGs are the most common format for photographs and images on the web. They're ideal for photos because they can store millions of colors while maintaining relatively small file sizes. However, even with their built-in compression, JPEG files can often be made much smaller without noticeable quality loss.

Large image files slow down your website, use up storage space, and take longer to send via email or messaging apps. If your website has high-resolution photos, these files are taking up unnecessary bandwidth and slowing down page load times. Compressing these images will reduce the file size without significantly affecting their visible quality. Now you have smaller files taking up less space in storage and your pages will load faster.

If you have many photos on your page, compressing them could drastically improve your website's speed.

How can you compress a JPEG?

Compressing a JPEG is incredibly simple using our free online tool. There's no software to download, no need to register, and no limit to the number of compressions you can do. All processing happens directly in your browser using WebAssembly technology — your files never leave your device.

The first thing you'll need to do is select one or up to 20 JPEG files by clicking the Upload Files button or by dragging images into the drop zone. Don't worry: if you have more than 20 JPEGs, you'll be able to do multiple batches, but you're limited to 20 at a time.

Once your files are added, click the COMPRESS button to start processing. Your browser will analyze each file and compress it using optimal settings. When compression is complete, you can download files individually by clicking DOWNLOAD below each thumbnail, or download all files at once.

If you want to adjust the compression for each image, simply click on a thumbnail to launch manual mode. Change the quality level using the slider until you reach the desired balance between size and quality. Click the APPLY button and move on to the next image. Then proceed to the download stage.

If you still have more JPEGs that need compressing, click the CLEAR QUEUE button and start over. You can process as many batches as you need.

Is it safe to compress JPEG files?

Our compression tool is not only easy to use but completely safe and private. All image processing happens entirely in your browser — your files are never uploaded to any server. This means no one else can see your images, and there's no risk of data leaks. Your original files remain untouched on your device, so you can always re-compress them with different settings if needed.
